Local Government

This section provides an overview of regional and local government structure and elections. It covers the association under which the mandate for local government falls. Details are provided on the number and nature of administrative units into which the country is divided and the nature of bodies that represent them. This varies across the Commonwealth, from centres with significant devolution of power to local authorities to those with no devolved government.

Healthy democratic local government across the Commonwealth is promoted by the Commonwealth Local Governance Forum, which works with national and local governments in order to support the development of good local governance. It encourages the exchange of best practice between nations through conferences, events, projects, research and information.
