Welcome to Mauritius

JugnauthThe Hon. Sir Anerood Jugnauth
Prime Minister, Republic of Mauritius

It gives me great pleasure to address this message to visitors to the “Commonwealth of Nations” Website.

Mauritius is known for its natural beauty, its white sandy beaches with turquoise water and lush greenery. As Mark Twain noted ” You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.”

Mauritius is also blessed with a multi-ethnic society with rich traditions and cultures from Europe, Africa and Asia. The country is a fully functioning democracy with a Westminster system of Government, the rule of law and a constitution which guarantees the protection of individual freedom and human rights. Since independence in 1968, Mauritius has developed from a low-income, agriculture based monocrop economy to a middle income diversified economy with growing industrial, financial and tourist sectors. We are gearing ourselves now to address the challenges of globalisation through a process of innovative steps to further diversify the economy with emphasis on the IT sectorwhich already provides employment opportunities to many young men and women in the country. We are also actively pursuing a project to make Mauritius a sea-food hub in the Indian Ocean region.

I encourage you to explore the “Commonwealth of Nations” Website with a view to finding more about Mauritius and the numerous opportunities which are available to visitors and investors in the country.
